Once a Brother: An Irish Christian Brother's Story
In the 1940s and 1950s the Irish Christian Brothers dominated male education in many towns of Ireland. Once a Brother is the autobiographical story of a boy who left his home at 14 to join the Brothers and left 11 years later at the age of 25.
In the training houses he was not allowed to read newspapers, listen to the radio or go out alone. He was allowed to visit his home after being away for five years but returned as a stranger to his own family.
Behind these prohibitions he was indoctrinated as a member of the religious order which played a major part in the education of Irish youth in towns and cities. Eventually in the last three years he decides after much thought to leave and returns to a society he no longer recognises. A touching true story.
