Ivan currently hosts the breakfast show on U105 and writes on sport for a number of newspapers but as a fellow Belfast Boy writing George Best: The Legend - In Pictures was a challenge he particularly enjoyed. "George Best was an icon before most of us really understood the meaning of the word. His ability as a footballer has been unsurpassed. His impact still lingers on. Even Pele called George 'the greatest footballer of all time'. Coming from Pele that really meant something. When George was asked if this was true he said quite simply, 'Yes, I was the best player in the world.' Then he made a joke about it so no one would think he was big headed by saying, 'Well Pele said I was and who am I to argue with him!' A vintage Best statement - milking the moment, enjoying the compliment and, as always, giving us great entertainment."
George was the first football superstar. There had always been football heroes but George became the first footballer to be embraced by pop culture and was the reason why many teenage girls started to attend football matches. They weren't interested in the games - just screaming at George which they started to do as soon as he took control of the ball! As Ivan says, 'He had the looks. The fast cars. The dolly birds. The lifestyle. But above all he had the talent. The photographs show just how showbiz life became for George and his life took many turns over the years. But he knew what his true legacy would be when he said, 'When I'm gone people will forget all the rubbish and all that will be remembered will be the football. That'll do for me.' Not a bad legacy for the 'Belfast Boy' to leave."
