Conor - Drawing from Life

Conor - Drawing from Life focuses on both the well-loved Ulster artist William Conor (1881-1968) and the city of Belfast. Conor shaped the way that Belfast people saw themselves and their city. His paintings of 'shawlies', shipyard workers and happy children are as familiar to many Northern Irish people as Constable's Haywain or Van Gogh's Sunflowers.

The best-known paintings, however, represent only a tiny part of his work. The Ulster Folk and Transport Museum holds many works by Conor. Some of these are preparatory drawings for big paintings, but there are also numerous tiny sketches, which record moments in time as observed by the artist. Along with two thought-provoking introductory essays on the artist and Belfast in the early 20th century, this book centres on over 80 of these smaller works. Beautifully reproduced in colour throughout, the works can be enjoyed both as inspiring drawings and as a wonderful record of the everyday world in which Conor lived.
