Shadows on GlassA celebrated study of the life and times of thirteen early photographers in Ulster presents over 100 photographs, most of them published here for the first time. While some are from well-known collections, many have only come to light in the past few years and as Brian Walker writes in his introduction: "Brief moments of light and shade captured by the photographer on fragile, plate glass negatives, these photographs present us today with strong and lasting images of a lost world." "A fascinating book showing various aspects of Ulster life, rural and urban, high and low, between the 1860s and 1920s... Many of the photographers were amateurs, like Mary Alice Young of Galgorm Castle; others were professionals, like R. J. Welch and W. A. Green, but the quality of their work is splendid. Mary Young's pictures show the life of the well-heeled huntin', fishin' and shootin' class. At the other end of the spectrum are Rose Shaw's pictures, which reproduce the life of the farm labourers of the Clogher Valley with a sympathy as near to poetry as makes no difference."
