Living Like a Lord - The Second Marquis of Donegall 1769-1844George Augustus Chicester, sixth earl and second marquis of Donegall, was one of the greatest landowners in Ireland at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Yet by the time he entered on his inheritance he was already deeply in debt for sums lost in gaming and horse-racing, and for the rest of his life did his best, with considerable success, to avoid paying his creditors. Donegall's extraordinary financial dealings, and the fascinating glipmnses they provide of the lower life of the upper classes of the time, are the main themes of this book. His case is particularly interesting because he was the owner of a large provincial town at a crucial stage in its development and because he was an outstanding example of the spendthrift Irish aristrocrat often portrayed in the fiction of the period, an overdrawn character in every sense.
